Space cookies are cannabis cookies that develop a special effect through the processing of hemp. We show you how to prepare them at home, what ingredients you need, and what you should consider regarding dosage and storage.
What are Space Cookies?
Space cookies combine baking art with the effects of cannabis. Unlike smoking or vaping, you absorb the active ingredients through the digestive tract. This changes not only the intensity but also the way your body processes them.
Definition and Origin
The term Space Cookies originates from cannabis culture and describes cookies baked with cannabinoid-containing ingredients. The tradition dates back to the 1960s, when hemp-infused baked goods became popular, especially in counterculture. Today, they are part of a modern preparation method that focuses on precise dosing and conscious consumption.
Difference to Conventional Edibles
Edibles is the umbrella term for all edible cannabis products. Space cookies are a specific form of them. The difference from other edibles lies in their consistency and preparation method. While gummy bears or chocolate are often industrially manufactured, space cookies are usually made in one's own kitchen. This gives you full control over ingredients and active ingredient content.
Legal Situation in Germany
In Germany, the handling of cannabis has been partially liberalized since April 2024. Adults are allowed to possess and cultivate cannabis under certain conditions. The production of space cookies for personal use falls within this legal framework. Important: Selling remains prohibited, and distribution is subject to strict rules. We recommend informing yourself about the current legal situation beforehand.
Ingredients and Preparation
The quality of your space cookies depends on the preparation. Three steps are crucial: selecting the material, activating the active ingredients, and preparing the carrier base.
Choosing the Right Hemp Strain
For space cookies, flowers with a balanced cannabinoid profile are suitable. Pay attention to the THC content if you are aiming for a psychoactive effect, or choose CBD-rich strains for a milder experience. Terpenes influence the aroma of your cookies. Strains with earthy or sweet notes harmonize well with classic cookie recipes. Avoid material with mold or impurities.
Decarboxylation: The Most Important Step
Raw cannabis flowers contain THCA and CBDA – precursors that have little effect. Only through heating do they convert into THC and CBD. This process is called decarboxylation. Coarsely chop your flowers and spread them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Heat them at 110-120°C for about 30-40 minutes in the oven. The color should become slightly brownish without burning. This step is not optional – without it, your cookies will be ineffective.
Making Cannabis Butter or Cannabis Oil
The activated cannabinoids must be dissolved in fat, as they are not water-soluble. For cannabis butter, melt about 250g of butter over low heat and add the decarboxylated material. Let the mixture simmer for 2-3 hours at a maximum of 90°C, stirring occasionally. Then strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth and let cool. Alternatively, coconut oil works on the same principle. The finished butter forms the base for your cookie recipe.
Step-by-Step Instructions
With prepared cannabis butter, baking becomes a familiar process. The challenge lies in uniform distribution and gentle processing.
Basic Recipe for Space Cookies
You will need: 125g cannabis butter (room temperature), 100g sugar, 1 egg, 200g flour, 1 tsp baking powder, a pinch of salt. Optional: chocolate chips, nuts, or vanilla for additional flavors. Cream together butter and sugar, then add the egg. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt separately, then stir into the wet ingredients. The dough should be pliable, not too sticky. Form small balls and flatten them slightly on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Keep about 3cm distance between the cookies.
Baking Time and Temperature
Bake the cookies at 160-170°C for 12-15 minutes. Lower temperatures protect the cannabinoids and prevent degradation. The cookies are ready when the edges are lightly golden, but the center still appears soft. They will harden upon cooling. Baking for too long can reduce the effect and impair the aroma.
Avoiding Common Mistakes
Avoid excessively high temperatures – both during decarboxylation and baking. Cannabinoids are heat-sensitive and degrade more rapidly above 180°C. Another mistake: uneven distribution of cannabis butter in the dough. Stir thoroughly so that each cookie is similarly dosed. Label your space cookies clearly and store them separately from regular baked goods. This prevents confusion.
Dosage and Storage
The effect of space cookies differs fundamentally from inhaled forms of consumption. Patience and caution are your most important companions here.
Finding the Right Amount
Start with half a cookie or less, especially if you have no experience with edibles. The effect is delayed, and an overdose cannot be undone. Calculate how much starting material you used and divide it by the number of cookies. This will give you an approximate value per piece. For home-grown material with unknown THC content: it's better to start cautiously.
Onset and Duration of Effect
Unlike inhaling, it takes 30 minutes to 2 hours before you feel anything. The active ingredients must first pass through the digestive tract and be metabolized in the liver. There, the more potent 11-hydroxy-THC is formed from THC. The effect, however, lasts longer – often 4 to 8 hours, sometimes longer. Plan accordingly and do not consume more before the full effect has set in.
Storage for Maximum Shelf Life
Store space cookies airtight and cool. A resealable jar or a metal tin is suitable. In the refrigerator, they last about a week; in the freezer, several months. Light and heat degrade cannabinoids, so choose a dark place. Label the packaging clearly with contents and date. This way, you keep track and prevent unwanted consumption by others.
